Amanduna is located in the sand dunes just off the Praia do Pego along 70 kilometers of uninterrupted white sand beach. Island Planning Corporation developed the landscape masterplan and landscape design for the project.
The major landscape design challenge at Amanduna was that the site and the surrounding area had been planted with a Pinus pinaster forest, which is neither native nor attractive. IPC’s landscape masterplan called for extensive restoration of the native flora, including large-scale reintroduction of Pinus pinea, a coastal pine indigenous to the dune environment. The major logistical problem was that all local salvageable material was growing in pure sand, requiring IPC to devise an effective method of retaining the sand around the rootball during digging, transportation, and planting.
