The Chedi Andermatt is located at an altitude of 1440 meters in an Alpine valley ringed by the Furka, Oberalp, and St Gotthard passes. IPC provided landscape design, plant sourcing, and specimen tree installation services for the project.
Due to the vertical scale of the Chedi architecture IPC’s challenge was to source suitably-scaled, climate-adapted trees and oversee their transportation and installation. In addition to relocating mature trees on-site, we transplanted close to 70 Swiss Stone Pines, ranging between 7 – 15 m tall from a neighboring valley over the Oberalp Pass. Because of the harsh Alpine climate, preparing and root-pruning the Pines took two years. These trees were planted within the project site to open and frame views as well as veil the nearby Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn station.
The Chedi Andermatt opened in December of 2013.
